Partner: Kainuu Regional Council

Partner Description: Kainuu – the Region of Nature, Culture, and Sports

Kainuu, located in the heart of Finland, covers an area almost the size of Belgium. Stretching from Lake Oulujärvi to the Russian border, the region is home to around 73,000 residents. The largest town, Kajaani, houses nearly half of Kainuu’s population.

Kainuu is known for its blue-tinged hills, vast forests, and sparkling lakes. It offers visitors diverse nature experiences in destinations such as Vuokatti and Katinkulta in Sotkamo, Ukkohalla in Hyrynsalmi, and Paljakka in Puolanka. In Suomussalmi, Hossa National Park was established in 2017 to celebrate Finland’s centenary of independence.

Summer in Kainuu is filled with culture and sports. Highlights include the world-renowned Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, Kajaani Poetry Week, and the Kainuu Orienteering Week. In Suomussalmi, Theatre Retikka offers summer performances, while Kajaani City Theatre presents Finnish drama and works by playwright Anna Krogerus. The folk music festival Sommelo in Kuhmo and Kajaani Fest Lammen Loiskeet bring fresh cultural energy to the region.

Kainuu has deep cultural roots and has been home to many of Finland’s literary and artistic figures. Veikko Huovinen’s beloved character Konsta Pylkkänen and his “blue thoughts” became symbolic of the region’s spirit. Ilmari Kianto wrote The Song of the Hungry Land, Kainuu’s regional anthem, while poets like Eino Leino captured the essence of Finnish nature. Elias Lönnrot compiled the Kalevala in Kajaani, and artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela sketched his Aino Triptych by Lake Lentua. In 1917, even before Finland’s official independence, the “Old Man of Halla” in Suomussalmi and his group proclaimed Finnish independence.

Kainuu is also a strong sports region, known especially for ice hockey, Finnish baseball (pesäpallo), and skiing. Kajaanin Hokki plays hockey, Sotkamon Jymy dominates Finnish baseball, and Vuokatti Ski Team represents Finland internationally. The region also hosts unique sporting events like swamp football and snowshoe soccer.

Economically, Kajaani’s Renforsin ranta business park serves as a modern hub for diverse industries, already home to dozens of companies and over 500 employees.

Kainuu is a region where pristine nature, rich cultural heritage, and an active sporting life come together – offering residents and visitors alike experiences where tradition and modern life meet.
