In addition to the competition events, during the Kainuu Orienteering Week from June 30th to July 5th, 2024, there are plenty of various side activities available in Kajaani and elsewhere in Kainuu. The closest places for family activities may be found very near to your accommodation, especially if your accommodation is near Kajaani's local sports facilities.

Sprint orienteering alone or with a partner
During the rest days of the Kainuu Orienteering Week, there will be sprint orienteering available in Kajaani and Sotkamo. In Kajaani, sprint orienteering will take place on the first rest day, Monday, July 1st, from 2 pm to 5 pm, as well as from Tuesday to Thursday, July 2nd to 4th, during the KOW-info opening hours at the event centre.
The second opportunity for sprint orienteering will be in Sotkamo on the Wednesday rest day, July 3rd, with team sprint (duo) competitions.
Summer Experiences and Memories from Kajaani City Events
In early July, Kajaani comes alive with various city events, adding vibrancy to the streets and offering additional experiences alongside the orienteering week. Hiking on foot or by bike
Information and maps of Kajaani's numerous high-quality hiking and cycling routes are available on the city's website. In Kajaani's urban area, you'll find two MTB and local hiking trails in Lohtaja and Pöllyvaara. The 10-kilometer-long riverside route called Renforsin lenkki along the Kajaani River is a pleasant local activity spot and destination with its scenic views. If you don't have your own bike with you, you can rent a mountain bike, for example, from the rental point at the Kaukavesi Aquatics Centre.

Culture
Kajaani's cultural offerings include the city theatre, museums, cinema, and libraries. Additionally, Poetry Week will be visible around Kajaani from July 3rd to 7th. The traditional Poetry Week program includes theater, music, and literary performances for people of all ages and in various styles. Kajaani Castle, Kajaani Riverside Park, the scenic village of Paltaniemi, and the city's churches are also worth exploring.

Shopping
Kajaani offers a good selection of various larger and smaller stores and specialty shops. The Kajaanin Markkinakatu (Market Street) event brings different market vendors to Kauppakatu from July 3rd to 6th. The relaxed summer atmosphere in the city center also includes the Market Square with its market vendors and cafés.

Local services at your disposal
Kajaani offers a diverse range of hairdressing, massage, and wellness services. For activities on rainy days, there's the Kaukavesi Water Sports Centre, bowling alley, paddle and tennis halls, escape room, and several gyms. Kajaani also has two well-equipped outdoor gyms and a skate park, as well as several disc golf courses. Explore local sports facilities and skate parks.
