Welcome to join the organizing team of Kainuu Orienteering Week 2026!
Kainuu Orienteering Week is known as a family-friendly orienteering and holiday week, and it is one of the largest mass sports events in Finland, attracting 4,000–10,000 participants to Kainuu every year. Around 300–350 volunteers are involved in making the event happen each year. For the upcoming summer, we expect over 4,000 competitors and 1,500–2,000 spectators. There are many different types of volunteer tasks available, and most of them do not require any orienteering experience. Everyone’s skills and effort are valuable — there’s a role for all volunteers before, during, and after the event.
Kainuu Orienteering Week is a relaxed and cheerful event where orienteers of all levels, spectators, and volunteers enjoy the Kainuu summer and the celebration of a great sporting event. Come and join us — be part of something meaningful and fun!
We offer all our volunteers the following free benefits:
Before the event
- Lunch and coffee on every volunteering day during the competition centre construction
- Lunch and coffee for those working in the competition office on each volunteering day
During the event (28 June – 3 July 2026; competition days: Sun, Tue, Thu, Fri)
- With your official’s card, you’ll receive:
- Free bus transportation on each competition day (Suomussalmi–Competition Centre–Suomussalmi)
- Parking permit for the volunteer parking area (for those who cannot use the event bus)
- Lunch and coffee on each volunteering day
- Volunteer outfit (T-shirt + headwear: neck gaiter, running headband or cap)
After the event
- Lunch and coffee on each volunteering day during the dismantling of the competition centre
- Kainuu Orienteering Week 2026 Thank-You Event, held in autumn 2026 for everyone involved in organizing the event
- Volunteer certificate, available upon request after the event from the event secretary general (jukka.liuha@rastiviikko.fi).
- Note: Each volunteer is responsible for keeping track of their volunteering days, hours, and completed tasks.
Suomussalmi Municipality Summer Job Voucher 2026
Young people from the Suomussalmi area may be able to use the municipality’s summer job voucher for working at the event. Details will be confirmed in autumn 2025 and spring 2026. Typically, the summer job period with the voucher is about two weeks. After the event, participants will receive an official employment certificate to include in their CV. NOTE: Members of the organizing club aged 14 or younger may participate in Kainuu Orienteering Week if they wish; for others, active involvement in volunteering is expected. Please note that depending on the tasks, volunteering may begin already in May or June — so there are plenty of opportunities to take part!
