Preliminary categories and distances
The table below shows the preliminary distances for different categories. Map scale is 1:10000 by default. 1:7500 scales are marked separately.
COMPETITION RULES
The competition will be held according to the rules of the Finnish Orienteering Federation and the rules given by the organizer.
ENTRY AND REGISTRATION TO COMPETITION CATEGORIES
All entries to competition categories must be made before 31st May 2022 by 23:59.

The following information is required in entries made via email: name, year of birth, Emit card number, country, category, and the number of competition days (1,2,3,4). An invoice will be sent by email when the registration has been done. The participant’s entry will be valid when the whole participation fee has been paid into Kainuu Orienteering Week’s bank account.
Details of the registration and registered competitors can be found from the IRMA service.
Late entry and registration (with higher participation fees) must be made before 13th June 2022 by 23.59 directly to the IRMA service or via email to our competition office.

The participation fee has to be paid in the registration process in the IRMA service. The registration is valid when the participation fee has been paid.
ENTRY AND REGISTRATION TO OPEN COURSES (Open / recreational orienteering)
1) PRE-REGISTRATION IN KAINUU O-WEEK’S OPEN COURSES
Pre-registration with discounted participation fees is possible by using the Rastilippu service and until 13th June 2022 at 23.59 (only for Open A/B/C courses, 14-year-old or older). Pre-registration with discounted participation fees is possible only for the whole week participation (4 competition days). If the pre-registration is done only for single days the on-site participation fees will be used.
In the following open courses categories participants must entry and register by using the registration form which is published in rastiviikko.fi -> Entry -> Entry and registration into Kainuu O-Week open courses:
- OPEN (A/B/C tracks), under 14-year-old
- OPEN/Family-RR

Instructions for the pre-registered open orienteers:
Pre-registrations (with own Emit card): Pick up competition number from the binders near the Open Courses info tent at the Competition Centre. Mount the competition number on the chest and you can go directly to the start line. In this case, you do not need to visit the Open Courses info.
Pre-registrations (with a rental Emit card): After arriving at the Competition Centre go to the Open Courses info tent’s “pre-registration” stand. From there you will receive your competition number and a rental Emit card.
2) ON-SITE REGISTRATION IN KAINUU O-WEEK’S OPEN COURSES
By using the Rastilippu-service
On-site registration is possible by using the Rastilippu service (only for Open A/B/C courses, 14-year-old or older) during 14th June to 8th July.
In the following open courses categories participants must entry and register on-site by using the registration form which is published in rastiviikko.fi -> Entry -> Entry and registration into Kainuu O-Week open courses:
- OPEN (A/B/C tracks), under 14-year-old
- OPEN/Family-RR

Registration is possible on-site at the Open Courses info tent during the whole week 3-8 July.

Notice! If you are registering on-site at the Competition Centre we recommend to you to fill up the registration form: rastiviikko.fi -> Entry -> Entry and registration into KOW open courses.
CANCELLATION AND CHANGES
NOTICE! Before registering, read the terms of the cancellation and changes from our website: www.rastiviikko.fi → 2022 → Entry. When a participant has registered for an event either through the IRMA-service, the Rastilippu-service, via the registration form or by e-mail, it is considered that the participant has accepted these terms of cancellation and changes of the event.
- If the participation is cancelled before 31st May (at the year of the event) the whole participation fee will be paid back. We will charge an office fee.
- If the participation is cancelled after 31st May (at the year of the event) we will pay back 50% of the participation fee in case of illness, injury or other relevant reason. Official doctor's statement is required.
- If the participation fee has been paid by (any) sport benefit we cannot pay back the participation fee in the case of cancellation due the Finnish Tax Administration's guidelines.
- Change of the category is possible without any cost until 31st May (at the year of the event). After 31st May we will charge 10 € office cost if the category is changed.
Other expenses concerning changes of categories (1st June - 2nd July 2022):
- In the competition categories the change of category is not possible after the 2nd July 2022. See other expenses from our website.
Changes of the Emit card number
Competition categories
- Changes to the registered emit-card number are free of charge until the end date of the late-entry period.
- Participants can change the Emit card number directly in the IRMA-service or by e-mail info@rastiviikko.fi until the end date of the late-entry period.
- After the ending date of the late-entry period the change of the Emit card number is possible ONLY by email into info@rastiviikko.fi
Open courses (recreational orienteering)
- Changes of the Emit card number must be informed to the office info@rastiviikko.fi until the ending date of the pre-registration period. After this date the changes must be made on-site at the event in the Open Courses info tent in the competition centre.
Transfer or cancellation of the event
- If the event has to be transferred (into the new organizing dates) due to bad conditions or emergency (Force Majeure) the all already paid participations will be automatically transferred into the new organizing dates of the event.
- If the event has to be transferred (into the new organizing dates) due to bad conditions or emergency (Force Majeure) and if the participant then cancels the registration, the whole participation fee will be paid back. In this case we will charge an office fee of 5 € / participation day / participant.

EMIT PUNCHING SYSTEM
The Emit punching system will be used in every category of the Kainuu Orienteering Week (KOW). If you have your own Emit card, the number of the card must be given as you register. Organizers will reserve rental Emit cards for those who do not have their own card. The rental of the Emit card is 5 € per day or 15 € per week. The rented Emit cards can be picked up from the KOW info at the Competition Centre. The rent must be paid on-site, if it is not already paid. For open courses, the Emit card rental is available at the Open Courses info at the Competition Centre. If the participant doesn’t return the Emit card, we will charge 90 €.
EVENT CENTRE: The Event Centre is located at Koulukatu 2, Puolanka.
COMPETITION CENTRE (Luhtakangas)
The Competition Centre is located about 10 km southeast of the Puolanka. The navigation address of the Competition Centre is Kuirivaarantie 1, Puolanka. The Competition Centre has e.g. restaurant and café services, orienteering and sports equipment shops, Muksula (Children’s day care), a dog park and showers with warm water. It is possible to set up club tents starting at 15.00 on Saturday 2nd July. It is forbidden to camp / stay in the area of the Competition Centre and the competition terrain!
TERRAIN
Competition terrain of the Kainuu Orienteering Week 2022 is definitely one of the most greatest and diverse in the Kainuu region area. Luhtakangas is a pine forest-dominated terrain crowned by the demanding slopes of Pyssykulju and Kuirivaara. In Äikänvaara hill area the orienteers will enjoy challenging and traditional Kainuu-type spruce forest. Great nature experiences for orienteers are provided by the old forest conservation area on the top of Äikänvaara (Natura 2000 network). In the use of terrain and course setting, special efforts have been made to ensure that all categories have access to the best orienteering areas. Race days are offered with a variety of themes from middle distance to long distance..
MAP
Scale 1:10 000, colour printout 6/2022. Scale 1:7500 is used in older age categories. Maps are in plastic cover. Mapping: Mapline Oy / Rauno Asikainen, Teemu Köngäs, Pasi Jokelainen and Pekka Hiltunen.
STARTS
There are five (5) different start areas in Kainuu O-Week 2022. Distances from the Competition Centre to the start areas are between 500−2500 metres. In elite categories (H/D16-21E) the pursuit start is used on the last competition day.
START TIMES AND START LISTS
Free start times are used In all categories H/D8-95 except in elite categories H/D16-21E.
Participants of the competition categories can choose their start times for the competition days starting from the week 24.
Start lists of the competition categories (without start times) and the start lists of the elite categories H/D16-21E (with start times) are published on www.rastiviikko.fi website on the week 24.
Kainuu O-Week open courses registered participants are published on the website www.rastiviikko.fi -> Start lists and results.
GPS-TRACKING
In H/D16-21E categories competitors may have to use a GPS tracking device.
MUKSULA (Children’s day care)
Muksula is intended for pre-school-aged children and it is open each competition day. Please do not bring a sick child (fever, stomach flu, etc.) to Muksula.
Pre-registration must be done by the 27th June 2022 by using the registration form on our webpage: www.rastiviikko.fi -> 2022 -> Event Centre and Competition Centre -> Children’s day care. The children who are not pre-registered can only be admitted to the day care if there is free space!
Children’s day care prices are as follows:
Pre-registration by 27th June 2022: 10 € / day / child
On-site registration: 15 € / day / child
Prices include a little snack and refreshment drink for each day care day.
RASTIRALLI (Adventure track)
Adventure track is adventurous, funny, easy and well-guided orienteering track for kids under the school age.
Prices for the adventure track are: 5 € / day, 15 € / week
KOW-INFO (competition office and info)
The KOW info is at the Event Centre and the Competition Centre. During the competition days the KOW info is open at the Competition Centre. Detailed opening hours for the KOW info will be released in the Spring 2022 in the competition instructions and on our webpage.
KOW WEBSHOP
Kainuu Orienteering Week products can be purchased from our webshop www.rastiviikko.fi -> Webshop. From the webshop you can buy for ex. accommodation (holiday apartments, private houses etc.), KOW merchandise and clothes, VIP and FAMILY parking tickets, competition bus tickets and other services.
ACCOMMODATION
Holiday apartments and other private houses are available for rent in our webshop.

TRAINING
Training is possible on several maps in Paljakka, Honkavaara (near the city centre of Puolanka), KOW’s 1st and 2nd stage terrain after the 2nd stage, Ukkohalla and Suomussalmi.
The participants of the Kainuu MTB-O Week are allowed to train in Honkavaara and Paljakka areas only after Kainuu MTB-O Week’s 2nd and 3rd stage. As a participant of the Kainuu O-Week the participants of the Kainuu MTB-O week can orienteer in 1st and 2nd stage of the Kainuu O-Week: separate training on these terrains is not allowed before Kainuu MTB-O Week’s last and 4th stage.
Training maps can be purchased from the KOW info.
On Monday 4th July the first rest day of Kainuu O-Week an open orienteering event will be held in the Event Centre at the city centre of Puolanka (see “other things to do” program).
Additionally, open sprint orienteering (with different tracks than 4th July event) tracks are arranged in the Event Centre and Puolanka city centre area between 5th - 8th July 2022.
GUIDING
Guiding to the Competition Centre is on the road 78 about 8 km southeast of the Puolanka. The guiding posts will be placed on friday 1st July 2022 at 15.00.
ARRIVING AND PARKING
Parking areas are 300-1000 metres from the Competition Centre.
Parking tickets
Parking display tickets will be checked when leaving the parking area. A parking display ticket can be purchased in advance from the webshop or on-site from the KOW info at the Event Centre or Competition Centre. You can also purchase the display ticket when leaving the parking area (either in cash or card). We strongly recommend you to purchase your display ticket in advance so you do not have to wait when you are leaving the parking area.

P2 FAMILY 35 € / week (only pre-order ticket – buy from the webshop)

P5 Event Centre parking area is located at the Event Centre. There is a competition bus transportation between Event Centre and Competition Centre. Transportation takes about 25-30 minutes.
P3-P4 parking areas are located 0,5-1,0 km from the Competition Centre.
P2 FAMILY parking area is located 0,4-0,5 km from the Competition Centre.
Family parking is meant for families with little kids and there is a limited amount of parking slots available. Family parking ticket can be bought in advance from our webshop.
P1 VIP parking is about 350-400 m from the Competition Centre. The space in the VIP parking is available for all participants for KOW, however the space is limited. The VIP parking display tickets may be purchased in advance from our webshop.
BUS TRANSPORTATION
Competition bus will service between the Event Centre (Puolanka) − Competition Centre - Event Centre. Ticket prices, timetables and routes can be found from www.rastiviikko.fi.
PRIZES
There will be money prizes for overall winners in categories H/D21E as follows:

In each category, 1-3 competitors are awarded according to overall standings and the number of participants in each category. Prizes are products and gift tokens. Stage winners are awarded in stages 1,2 and 3. In categories H/D8-10 RR and Open/Family-RR there will be a participation prize for every participant.
In open courses (A/B/C, Open/Family-RR) one prize in each category is raffled on each day.
20th, 30th, 40th and 50th anniversary medals
All orienteers who are participating into the Kainuu Orienteering Week for the 20th, 30th, 40th or 50th time, please inform us and leave your contact information at our office (info@rastiviikko.fi) by 31st May 2022 so that we can reserve enough anniversary medals for everyone. Anniversary medals are awarded in conjunction with stage winners’ prize-giving ceremonies.
OTHER THINGS TO DO
2nd Kainuu Trail Hossa National Park (Finland) trail running 2.7.2022.
The second Kainuu Trail Hossa National Park trail running will be arranged on Saturday 2nd July 2022. Running distances are 78, 55, 38, 21 and 10 k. The first official Kainuu MTBO Week in the history of Kainuu Orienteering Week will be held in the summer of 2022.
