The competition area of Kainuu Orienteering Week has been used for centuries as a transit route, as well as for hunting and tar production – explore the history of the area!

Just near the Kainuu Orienteering Week competition centre, close to the hiking trail that circles Syväjärvensärkkä, there is a cross made of stones laid on the ground. It is called the Traveller’s Cross, and according to local stories, it was made by a traveler who rested at the site.

The start arrangements for Kainuu Orienteering Week will change in summer 2026. Instead of the six start areas used in recent years, there will again be five. This marks a return to the previous, traditional way of organizing the starts.
